Surgical Complications of CAPD


Abstract
Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis(CAPD) has become a practical, effective, and popular method of management for patients with end-stage renal disease(ESRD).
It has increased the requirement of the this form of treatment along with the development of the instruments and new techimque.
Surgical experience with 169 consecutive patients with end-stage renal disease(ESRD) receving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis(CAPD) in Hanyang university hospital from 1986 to 1990 is reviewed.
Patients were aged 7 to 88 years(Mean age: 46 years)with the age of males and females being similar(mean age: 45 and 48 years, respectively).
Of 169 cantheters inserted, 39(23%) cases required removal due to complications, of which 24 (62%) cases were attributed to peritonitis. And other complications, were 16 cases of outlet obstruction (14%), 8 cases of tunnel infection(7%), 9 cases
of
leakage(8%), 2 cases of bleeding(2%), 2 cases of hydrocele(2%), and 3 cases of catheter expulsion(3%).
And we used double-cuff Oreopoulos-Zimmermann TWH 2 disc bubble catherter made by ASI Co. in U.S.A.
